Trenchless sewer repair rebuilds a failing line with little or no digging. Instead of excavating the whole length of the pipe, the crew works through one or two small access points, which keeps driveways, mature trees, patios, and finished landscaping intact. There are two methods, and the camera decides which one fits your line.
Cured-in-place pipe lining (CIPP)
A felt or fiberglass liner soaked in resin is pulled or inverted into the existing pipe, inflated against the walls, and cured hard. The result is a new jointless pipe inside the old one. Lining works when the host pipe still holds its shape: cracked clay, corroded cast iron, or a line with root intrusion at the joints. It cannot correct a bad slope, and it slightly reduces the interior diameter, which is rarely a problem for a residential lateral.
Pipe bursting
A cone-shaped bursting head is pulled through the old line on a cable. It fractures the old pipe outward into the surrounding soil while pulling a new seamless HDPE pipe in behind it. Bursting handles pipe that is broken, collapsed in spots, or too weak to line, including Orangeburg, which bursts easily because the material is soft. It needs an access pit at each end.
When trenchless is the right call
- The line runs under a driveway, sidewalk, deck, mature trees, or a finished area
- The pipe is damaged but has not lost its alignment
- You want the shortest possible restoration afterward
- There is room for equipment access at both ends of the run
When open-trench replacement is better
- The pipe has lost its grade and needs to be re-sloped. A liner will sag wherever the old pipe sags.
- The line has fully collapsed over a long stretch
- The failure is at the connection to the city main and the tap has to be re-made
- The run is short and crosses open lawn, where digging is simply cheaper

Is trenchless always cheaper than digging?
No. The equipment setup cost means a very short repair can cost about the same either way. Trenchless wins once there is expensive surface to protect, such as a driveway or mature trees.
How long does a trenchless repair take?
Most full-lateral lining or bursting jobs are done in a day, plus curing time for a liner. Compare that with two to five days for open-trench replacement.
Does the new pipe last as long as a dug replacement?
Yes. CIPP liners and HDPE burst-in pipe are both rated for 50-plus years, comparable to new PVC.
Can you line a pipe that has a sag or belly?
No. A liner follows the shape of the old pipe. A sagging section has to be dug up and re-graded, or the whole run replaced.
Will trenchless work on Orangeburg pipe?
Lining usually will not, because there is not enough structure left to cure against. Pipe bursting works well on Orangeburg because the material fractures easily.
Do I still need a permit for trenchless work?
Yes. Any repair or replacement of the buried line is permitted through the city, township, or county and inspected. The contractor handles it.
