Sewer excavation is the open-trench side of sewer work: reaching the buried line by digging so it can be repaired, replaced, re-graded, or reconnected. Trenchless methods have reduced how often a full dig is needed, but some problems can only be solved with access to the pipe.
When digging is the only option
- The line has a belly or reverse slope that has to be re-graded. No liner fixes a sag.
- A section has fully collapsed and there is no continuous pipe to line or burst through
- The connection at the city main has failed and the tap must be rebuilt
- A new lateral is being installed, such as a septic-to-sewer conversion
- The line is too shallow, too damaged, or too obstructed for equipment to pass
How we keep the dig small
Every excavation starts with a camera inspection and a locate that marks the exact position and depth of the problem from the surface. That lets us open only the length we need instead of trenching the whole yard. We call in utility locates before any digging, hand-dig near marked lines, and shore the trench where depth requires it.
Restoration
Backfill is placed and compacted in lifts so the ground does not settle later. We restore the finished grade, reseed or lay sod, and replace any concrete, asphalt, or pavers that were removed. Larger jobs may leave the soil to settle for a few weeks before final surface work.

Local notes
Two Livingston County conditions make excavation here more involved. The frost line runs about 42 inches, so laterals are typically four to six feet down and trenches are correspondingly deep. And in the lake-area and low-lying subdivisions the water table is high enough that a trench often needs a pump running while the work is done. Both are normal here and factored into the plan.

How deep will the trench be?
Most Livingston County laterals are four to six feet down because of the frost line. The locate gives the exact depth before we start.
How long does the yard take to recover?
Reseeded areas take a full growing season to blend in; sod is quicker. Larger excavations may be left to settle for a few weeks before final grading and surface repair.
Do you handle utility locates?

Will you restore my driveway or sidewalk?
